Newsletter 004, 04 November, 2006

Welcome to the fourth newsletter.

Past newsletters are archived at the troop's website http://www.biztaxpros.com/troop804. There have also been a few more helpful links added to the website regarding advancement and safety.

During the last few meetings (16 October, 2006; 23 October, 2006; and 30 October, 2006) the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts did the following:

…The boys continued to develop teamwork skills through outdoor activities such as blind man's bluff, tug of war, SPUD et cetera.

…The Boy Scouts have finished discussing the first aid requirements for the Tenderfoot rank. They should be ready in the next few weeks to be lightly tested on all of the requirements for the rank of Tenderfoot.

…The Tiger Cubs visited the Glenwood Fire Station for their Go See It in October.  They learned about fire safety, when to call 911, and how the firefighters use many different tools to fight fires and rescue people.  They saw how the "jaws of life" work, sat in the front of the fire truck and even held the fire hose to see how powerful the water coming out can be.  They had a great time, and the trip increased their appreciation for the bravery of our firefighters and how they serve our community every day.

…The Cub Scout Raingutter Regatta was held on 30 October, and the Cubs got a chance to show off their handiwork.  The boats were each a work of art unto themselves, and hopefully parents and children got a good chance to have fun together building the vessels.  The Boy Scouts were kind enough to volunteer their meeting time to assist the Cubs with their races.  It's fair to say that everybody had a good time.  The Webelos den swept the pack away with their sailing skills.  The overall third place prize went to Walker Phillips, second went to Jonathan Freeborough, and first place to Bryan Vojnar.

The two sections of rain gutter were created and prepared by Michael Herman of Mike Herman Siding, Inc. as a special donation to Pack 804.  Please keep this in mind should you need the services of a siding/gutter company. We are also thankful to one of our cub Dads, Les Peatt, for his work in preparing for and setting up the regatta, and for building the starting gates for the gutters.

The Webelos den is enjoying the donation of leather pieces by Mrs. Karen Russi for use in their neckerchief slide project.

We would like to welcome three new Cub Scouts to the pack, Mitchell Bruggner, Christopher Cespedes, and Joshua Santiago, and three new Boy Scouts to the troop, Tyler Bruggner, Daniel Peatt, and Anthony Santiago!

Don't forget that all ages of boys will be meeting at the Edmunds Center at Stetson University at 6:40 on Monday evening, 6 November, 2006.  The tickets for this basketball game have been provided to all Cubs and Boy Scouts (and the parents of Tiger Cubs) by Stetson University.  Please be sure to express your thanks to those in charge whom we may encounter while there.  This game will take the place of all Scout meetings on the sixth, while the church sets up for Election Day (Tuesday.)

Some help will be needed on Wednesday, 8 November, 2006, from 8:00 - 10:00 AM at the church to set up for the bazaar.  Please call one of the Mr. Eckhardts if you can come.

The Cub Scout pack meeting will be held on 20 November, and all parents and family members of the Cubs are encouraged to attend.

There is an orienteering outing planned for 25 November from after lunch to before dinner at Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge.  More exact times will be announced.  The purpose of this approximately three-mile hike will be to present the basics of orienteering to the Boy Scouts before our slightly more advanced over-night orienteering campout, which is planned for the 8th and 9th of December (Friday after lunch until Saturday before dinner.)  The older Webelos who are of the age to be working toward their Arrows of Light are also invited to both of these events, as they will both fulfill requirements for the Arrow of Light, the most important award in Cub Scouting.  Scoutmaster Eckhardt still wears his Arrow of Light as part of his uniform today.

Pastor Tom has extended an invitation to all Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts to join the church for Christmas Caroling on Sunday, 17 December, 2006.  The plan is to meet at the church at 4:30 PM for travel (by private cars) to various nursing homes to carol.  Afterward there will be cookies and hot chocolate back at the pastor's house next to the church.

Don't forget the church bazaar on Saturday 11 November, 2006.  The two Mr. Eckhardts have worked out scheduling details which should keep us from becoming too numerous and running into each other.  This schedule is listed below.  Please call one of the Mr. Eckhardts if there is a problem with your part of the schedule. There will be a lot of work to do including setup and food preparation.

We are still getting some requests from our fellow citizens for service from the Boy Scouts in exchange for monetary donations. Boys who participate will, of course, receive the individual benefit of their labors in their personal or den accounts.
