Newsletter 001, 12 September, 2006 Scoutmaster Troy will try to get newsletters like this one out as often as possible, possibly after each meeting. A website for the troop is located at http://www.biztaxpros.com/troop804 During the last meeting (11 September, 2006) the Boy Scouts: …Wrote a letter of thanks to Pastor Dave Walker of the Lighthouse Christian center for the church's donation of much camping equipment to the troop. The boys signed the letter, and Scoutmaster Troy sent it to the church. …Evan Sieg was elected as the Wolverine patrol's new assistant patrol leader …Matthew Shaughnessy was elected as the Timber Wolf patrol's new assistant patrol leader. …Ian Shaughnessy was elected as the troop's new treasurer. …Announced that the troop's schedule is available for viewing as a Google calendar. It will be on the troop's webpage as well as here: http://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=6skl55i79d3s6mdhtm01ns481k%40group.calendar.google.com. It can be integrated into your own Google calendar as well. …We established dues of $1 per meeting night for each boy. Ian, our new treasurer will collect and account for it. …It was announced that all profits from fundraising will be split as follows: Cub Scouts: 2/3 to the pack and 1/3 to the individual dens' accounts, split according to participation. Boy Scouts: 2/3 to the troop and 1/3 to the individual scouts' accounts, split according to participation. During the last meeting the Tiger Den worked on requirement 1F, a family scrapbook. Our popcorn sale is in full swing. Order forms and popcorn were sent home with each family after the meeting. There will be an official Boy Scout or Cub Scout prize given to the top selling Scout and Cub. There are some Cub Scout store-front sales groups forming, and anyone interested should contact their den leader or pack leader. We are planning a fundraising breakfast at the church on 21 October, 2006 from about 6am to 12pm. Tickets will be pre-sold by the boys for $4, and will be $5 at the door. Please invite everybody you know. The rummage sale has been put on hold for the time being. The Presbyterian ladies' bazaar will be held first, and they will donate their leftover goods to us to sell at our rummage sale. During the ladies' bazaar, the Scouts and Cubs will be helping serve breakfast, selling stuff, and cleaning up. This will last from about 8am to 1pm on 11 November, 2006. The Boy Scouts will be camping from Saturday, 16 September, 2006 at 11am until Sunday, 17 September, 2006 at about 1pm. This trip is specifically for the purpose of fulfilling the requirements for the rank of Tenderfoot, but secondarily just for fun. All knives and fire starting implements will be taken by Scoutmaster Troy until / unless the boy has earned the credentials for carrying such items. We will be working on these credentials during the campout. We will meet at Scoutmaster Troy's property on the corner of Glenwood Road and BriarPatch Lane at 11am. Church service will be held and conducted on Sunday morning by Scoutmaster Troy. Any boy who wishes to attend his regular service may do so, and should plan to take a cold hose shower in a bathing suit and should bring clothing suitable for his church. It is also asked that after going to regular church, that the boys return for lunch, and to take down the campsite. The Bible Baptist Church is within walking distance of the campsite. Boys who wish to attend another church must make travel arrangements. There will be occasions during which it will be impossible to attend regular church during camping trips due to distance restrictions. During the campout the Wolverines will be preparing Saturday's Dinner, The Leadership Patrol will be preparing Sunday's breakfast, and the Timber Wolves will be preparing Sunday's lunch. The Boy Scouts have been asked to read chapter nine in their handbooks before the camping trip. There is a check sheet on pages 224-225. Bug repellent should be added to the list. Sunscreen is also missing from the list, but should not be very necessary for this trip. There is a tentative meeting for the patrol and troop leadership (Blake Salveson, Samuel Lopez and CJ Long) at my office (1133 Glenwood Road) at 5pm on Wednesday, 13 September, 2006. We will be planning and shopping for meals for the trip. We will be out until at least 7pm. For next week's meeting, 18 September, 2006 the Tiger Den will be meeting at the DeLand Public Library at 6:30pm. The Boy Scouts will be doing the second half of their personal fitness requirement for the Tenderfoot rank. For this reason, a t-shirt should be brought so the boys won't be rolling around in their expensive uniform shirts. It has been asked whether uniforms are necessary. I recommend that at the very least each boy have a uniform shirt, hat, and neckerchief. I know that uniform items are rather expensive. It is possible to use money from each boy's personal account within the troop (the 1/3 of profit from fund raising activities) to purchase uniforms if a hardship condition exists. See Scoutmaster Troy to set up such an arrangement. |
